Strategically located on the Puig Del Rei Hill. This palace was built in 1309 dominating the Roussillon plain and offering a wonderful panoramic view from the sea to the Canigou mountain range. King James II of Aragon ordered that the work be carried out by Ramon Pau and later by Pons Descoy in a gothic style. The interior decor with its Hispanic-Morrish influence, show its Mediterranean roots; the straight line architecture is a reminder that the palaces primary use was military for over five centuries. Open to visitors since 1958, the palace now reveals its secrets of the ramparts, its superimposed chapels, its two royal apartments and its magnificent gardens, an oasis of beauty and nature. Now belonging to the local council the Palace of the Majorcan Kings is still very much alive, providing a regal backdrop to many festivals.
